Topic Refinement; Periodicals

I. Research Log Entry (due Monday, February 18, 2008)

Go to your blog and create an entry.  This entry should answer the following questions:

     1. What was discussed today in class?

     2. Describe the differences among a "popular," a "trade/professional," and a "scholarly" journal.

     3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of print and electronic forms of periodicals?

II. Research Log Entry (due Thursday, February 21, 2008)

1. Using the feedback you received on your cluster topic, rewrite your topic in one or two sentences, making sure you have created a complex topic for your research.  Enter that in your log.
2. Using the feedback you received on your cluster topic, develop a list of words or phrases that you might use as search terms for your topic.  Enter those in your log.
3. Conduct a search in an appropriate database and select 2-3 articles for your topic.  This is NOT a web search.  Determine if the articles are from popular, trade/professional, or scholarly journals.  TRACK the bibliographic data you need to find the articles again, as you will need this information in a future class.  Write a research log entry that gives the following information:

a) your search process, including what you found, what difficulties you encountered, and what steps you took to overcome the difficulties

b) the bibliographic data you gathered on each article and the type of periodical in which it is included

c) what new steps you might take to continue your search for more periodical articles
