The Catalog

I. Research Log Entry (due Monday, February 25, 2008)

Go to your blog and create an entry. This entry should answer the following questions:

1. What was discussed today in class?
2. Describe the differences between "words" and "subject headings"
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of these search strategies?

II. Research Log Entry (due Thursday, February 28, 2008)

1. Using your cluster topic, as refined during this past week, conduct a search in the library catalog for relevant sources.  You should identify
   • A source in the books stacks
   • A source in the reference stacks
2. Keep track of the bibliographic information you need to find these sources in the catalog again.  Enter the details in your log for each title.
3. In your blog entry, describe
   • the processes you used to conduct your search
   • the problems you encountered
   • what you learned that you could use to search more effectively and efficiently

4. Find these sources on the shelves.  In the case of the reference title, make a print copy of the title, the verso (back) of the title page, and enough of the entry to be sure of the title (note also the page numbers of the entry).  In the case of the item from the book stacks, check it out at the circulation desk.  Bring both of these items with you to class on February 29.

    

   NOTE:  Remember that, to find relevant information, particularly in the reference collection, you may need to broaden your terms and look for an overarching topic that includes your particular topic.
